Iron is essential for production of hemoglobin in the blood for the body. It is also required for regulation of muscle and organ function. When there is low iron count, the body has to work harder for transporting oxygen to the whole body. This results in the person feeling fatigued and stressed.
If you experience symptoms like fatigue, tiredness, pale skin, dizziness, those could be signs of low iron in your body. The doctor would order an iron test for you to see if the symptoms are a result of iron deficiency or some other disorder. Likewise, when a person has iron overload, he experiences symptoms like joint pain, unexplained weight loss, reduced sex drive, abnormal heart rate, lethargy, etc.
Medications and supplements like testosterone, birth control pills, blood pressure and cholesterol medicines; all have the ability to alter iron levels. Hence, the doctor would instruct you to avoid them on the day before testing. He also decides whether midnight fasting is required to be done, depending on any other tests that may be done in conjunction with iron testing.
Iron testing is done by extracting blood sample; usually from veins running in the arms. The test results can help the doctor in interpreting if you have iron deficiency, anemia or a normal iron count.
Given ahead are the normal results of iron levels - 65 to 176 μg/dL is the normal range in men. 50 to 170 μg/dL is the normal range in women and 50 to 120 μg/dL in children. Further testing may be ordered by the doctor in event of abnormal results. Abnormally high levels of iron mean iron overload, liver failure, deficiency of healthy red blood cells. If there is anemia, the doctor may prescribe iron supplements and consumption of iron-rich foods in diet. CBC test can be prescribed along with this test.
