Ferritin Test Cost

Ferritin is a protein in blood that stores iron. A ferritin test is useful in the diagnosis of iron deficiency or its surplus. This test is used to predict and monitor iron deficiency. The test determines response to iron therapy or compliance with treatment.

Ferritin test is also useful to differentiate iron deficiency from chronic disease as cause of anemia and monitor iron status in patients with chronic renal disease with or without dialysis. It detects iron overload status and monitors rate of iron accumulation and response to iron-depletion therapy. It is also used for population studies of iron levels and response to iron supplement.

No special preparation before giving blood sample for ferritin testing is required. Remember to wear a short-sleeved tee-shirt or loose clothing, so that blood can be easily taken out from the arms. Consult with the doctor if you may need to do midnight fasting. Testing of ferritin levels in one's blood is done through simple drawing of blood. The lab technician applies an antiseptic solution to the area that is to be used for taking out blood. The area is usually in the inner region of the elbow. A tourniquet is used to wrap your upper arm, thus making drawing of blood easier. The blood sample is collected in a test tube and sent to a laboratory for processing.

20 to 500 nanograms per milliliter is the range of normal levels of ferritin in men while 20 to 200 nanograms per milliliter are the normal ferritin levels in women. Depending on the result, lower levels of iron means there is iron deficiency, likewise, excess levels of iron means iron overload. Further testing may be ordered in case of abnormal results.

Ferritin testing is done to confirm iron deficiency in a patient that was predicted by previous diagnostic tests. It is also done if CBC test shows reduced hematocrit and hemoglobin. It may also be ordered for diagnosing reasons of high levels of iron in one's blood. Lower levels of iron could cause symptoms like pale skin, constant headaches, feeling weak or dizzy, shortness of breath, brittle fingernails, damaged hair and skin. Similarly, sudden weight loss, feeling tired, joint pain, reduced sexual drive, abdominal pain, osteoporosis, are few consequences of high levels of iron in the body. High levels of iron can also lead to colon cancer. A ferritin test is ordered by the doctor to investigate the reasons behind high or low levels of iron in the patient's body.

Ferritin Test FAQs
Q: What is ferritin?
A: It is a protein type which is present in the body cells. It releases and stores iron for the body to utilize later.
Q: Why is ferritin test conducted?
A: To get a clue of the overall iron content by assessing the total measure of stored iron in the body. It could also be ordered if the doctor suspects iron overload or deficiency.
Q: What is the reference range for males and females?
A: Male: 12-300 ng/mL. Female: 12-150 ng/mL.
Q: What could 'lower than normal' ferritin level mean?
A: Internal bleeding, abdominal complications, and uncontrolled menstrual bleeding.
Q: Which conditions could be diagnosed with high ferritin level?
A: Frequent blood transfusions, rheumatoid arthritis, iron poisoning, liver disease, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, hyperthyroidism, leukemia, adult Still’s disease, and type 2 diabetes.
