Vitamin B12 and folate are part of the vitamin B complex. They are important in the formation of normal red blood cells, tissue repairs and in the synthesis of the DNA. Since body cannot produce both these vitamins, it is necessary to supply them through a well balanced diet.
Vitamin B12 test is ordered when signs and symptoms such as diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, anemia, pale skin, muscle weakness, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, sore mouth, tingling or numbness in feet, arms, legs, pins and needles sensation in the limbs, confusion and paranoia manifest themselves. The test is also often ordered when the person shows signs and has history of malnutrition and malabsorption.
The test is often advised to people who are undergoing B12 and folate supplement therapy to monitor the effectiveness and the progress of the treatment. It can also be suggested as a follow up test when there are large cells or low heamoglobin concentration is found during a complete blood count (CBC) test.
Deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate leads to a condition called macrocytic anemia, where the RBCs produced are larger in size. Megaloblastic anemia is a form of macrocytic anemia where the number of RBCs is few but they are larger in size. This condition also lowers the count of white blood cells (WBCs) as well as blood platelets. To overcome the deficiency, folate containing food products like green vegetables, beans, peas and vitamin B12 containing food products like red meat, milk, fish, poultry etc. should be consumed.
The procedure is simple wherein blood sample is collected from the vein and the sample is then analysed. No special precautions are necessary. Fasting 6-8 hours before the test is preferred. Let your doctor know all the medications you are taking because certain medications affect the B12 levels and thereby can impact the test results.
