Some of the indications of undergoing urine routine test are mentioned below:
- Swelling of limbs
- Periorbital swelling
- Burning while passing urine
- Fever with chills
- Pain before, during or after passing urine
- Passing blood while urinating
Other symptoms which have not been mentioned above may also be indications for undergoing urine routine test.
Urinary tract infection is the most common disorder for which urine routine test is usually prescribed. However, the test also helps in determining presence of underlying pathological changes in the urinary bladder, urethra, ureters and kidneys. It is the first choice of medical test done to investigate any kidney dysfunction.
Urine routine test is a non-invasive diagnostic test useful in diagnosing conditions like cystitis, physical injury to any part of the urinary tract system, polycystic kidney disorder, nephrotic syndrome etc. Patients having a long history of diabetes have to undergo urine test at regular intervals to check for health of kidneys. It may also be advised to patients who are scheduled for kidney surgery.
A urine sample, preferably collected early in the morning is required for urine routine test. Patients should ensure that they use a clean container to collect the urine sample. Pathology laboratories usually provide patients with sterilized flasks for the same.
Macroscopic examination of the urine sample helps in determining the color and appearance of urine. An unhealthy sample of urine may even show altered consistency of the urine. It may be albuminous or too thick in case of kidney disorders.
Microscopic examination is done to determine presence of infection, pus cells, blood cells, bacteria, proteins etc. Collectively, macroscopic and microscopic examination of urine sample helps in diagnosing disorders or kidney, liver, urinary bladder etc.
Urine culture test, kidney scan, USG of urinary bladder, are some diagnostic tests that may be advised along with urine routine test.
