Widal test is the medical procedure for identification of diagnosing the typhoid or paratyphoid fever. It is a serological test for measuring levels of antibodies in blood against salmonella antigens. It is considered as a surrogate marker and so provides indefinite evidence because of high instances of cross-reacting infections.
The test should be done on paired serum samples. The first sample is supposed to be taken early on in the disease, whereas the second one is to be taken 2 weeks later. The test comes positive if the TO antigen level is more than 1:160 ratio in a past infection. This test is widely used for surveys and government research for examining epidemic like situations in cities and towns.
