MIBG stands for meta-iodobenzylguanidine that can be labeled to Iodine-131 or Iodine-123 . MIBG scan involves injecting of this radioactive liquid material into the vein located in arm or at back of hand. This scan is generally recommended by doctors in order to diagnose neuro-endocrine cancer tumors that include neuro-blastomas (malignant tumor or cancerous tumor that affects nerve tissues in the body) and pheochromocytomas (cancer of adrenal gland). Neuroblastoma tumors commonly originate in adrenal gland but can also be found else where in the body.

Before one opts for MIBG scan, there are certain precautions that need to be practiced. Your doctor will provide details on protocols that need to be adhered to. Certain medications need to be discontinued or stopped for few days prior to the date of MIBG scan as they can interfere with radioactive element and falter results of scan. The list of medicines comprise tricyclic antidepressants, cocaine, sympathomimetics, antihypertensives and decongestants containing phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine. Also, the patient needs to let the doctor know whether she thinks she is pregnant or is breast-feeding.
Before MIBG scan procedure commences, nuclear medicine department at the hospital will administer patient with Lugol’s iodine solution or potassium iodide tablets. Thyroid gland is more susceptible to absorb radioactive element than any other part of the body and this could lead to malfunctioning of the gland. Hence, to prevent prevent thyroid gland from absorbing too much of radioactive element, Lugol’s iodine solution or potassium iodide tablets are given to the patient before MIBG scan begins.
MIBG scan is performed over a period of two days. On the first day, radioactive material is injected and patient is made to wait for four hours so that the radioactive element spreads throughout the body. Later, he/she is made to lie on a bed in a scanning room. A special type of scanner that uses gamma rays will move over the patient's body (it will not touch the body) and take pictures. Next day, patient is required to visit the hospital again to have images taken but sans injection of radioactive element.
MIBG scan is a safe procedure. There are rare chances of any side-effects. There could be a slight rise in blood pressure and if this happens, patient is monitored and blood pressure level is restored.
