LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) Test Cost

Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) is an enzyme that breaks down sugar into energy and distributes to the body. Energy is thus created for cells and tissues to function. The LDH test is not a specific test used for evaluating some specific disease conditions. The level of LD is sometimes ordered in addition to some other tests if a disease or similar condition is suspected by doctors. These conditions may display some kind of tissue damage. If the levels of LD are found to be high, more tests specific to the disease found may be prescribed. This test is prescribed in conjunction with other relevant tests.

The LDH enzyme is found in many different body-parts like liver, heart, lung, kidneys and brain to name a few. The doctor may order an LDH test for a variety of investigations. One of them is to find out causes of fluid-up in the body. It is also ordered to diagnose intensity of damage in body tissues, certain types of cancers and the progress of their treatments can also be mapped through this test. Development of muscular dystrophy and HIV AIDS can be tracked through LDH testing.

Certain medications need to be stopped prior to the test. It is necessary to have a word with your doctor before providing sample for the test so as not to get an inappropriate result. An LDH test is performed on a blood sample or also cerebrospinal fluid. Blood is either drawn from a vein in the arms or from the spinal canal. Wearing loose-fitted clothing is advisable, as providing the fluid or blood sample becomes easier. The site from where blood is removed is sealed with a bandage soon after to prevent loss of blood.

Normal ranges of LDH levels in teenagers and people in the age-bracket ahead is 100-190 U/L. Higher than normal levels of LDH signify tissue damage. This may be as a result of liver diseases, cardiac diseases, meningitis, hemolytic anemia, bone fractures, pancreatic disorders, acute muscle injury, etc. If the sample given was of cerebrospinal fluid and the results are higher than normal, it indicates presence of neurological disorders and inflammation in central nervous system. Diagnostic tests for checking liver damage are ordered in event of higher LDH levels in the patient.

LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) Test FAQs
Q: What is lactate dehydrogenase?
A: Lacate dehydrogenase is an enzyme which contributes in the breakdown of sugar. It is also released in large quantities when a cell dies.
Q: In which conditions can elevated LDH levels be seen?
A: Elevated LDH levels are often seen in certain cardiac failures, liver disease, hemolytic anemias, meningitis and some types of cancers.
Q: How is LDH test performed?
A: An LDH test can be performed either on a sample of blood or cerebrospinal fluid. A sample is taken with the help of needle and syringe under aseptic conditions.
Q: What is the normal range of LDH in the body?
A: The normal values of LDH in blood are:
For adults -122-222 U/L
For newborns - 135-750 U/L
For children - 110-295U/L
The ranges may vary in different laboratories based on the equipment used.
Q: Can LDH test be used exclusively to diagnose a disease?
A: No. Since LDH is found in almost all tissues of the body, it has to be performed in conjunction with other specific tests as well. This test can only determine the presence of tissue injury.
