If you happen to experience symptoms like difficulty in walking, difficulty in remembering things, bleeding gums, loss of appetite, headaches, improper digestion, they are signs of folic acid deficiency. Anemia, Celiac or Crohn’s disease, and intestinal disorders, are detectable through a folic acid test. You would do good to undergo a folic acid test as soon as possible if above symptoms are visible. Midnight fasting may be required before folic acid testing. It is advisable to inform your doctor regarding any vitamin supplements you may be taking for any other disorder.

A folic acid test is done through samples of blood. The site from where blood is to be taken out is cleaned. Usually, it is the inside of the elbow or forearm. A tourniquet is placed on it, so that the veins in that part swell. That makes taking out blood easier. A very thin needle is inserted inside a vein for removing blood. This is a very minute pricking sensation. Blood is taken out and collected in a test-tube. The punctured site is covered with a bandage and the test is done. Normal levels of folic acid are between 2.7 and 17.0 nanograms per milliliter. Lower than normal folic acid levels may be because of poor diet, malnutrition, poor absorption of nutrients, megaloblastic anemia etc.

Leafy vegetables, lentils, citric fruits, fortified cereal, eggs, beetroot, walnuts and flaxseeds, have high folic acid content. Including these in your diet would ensure deficiency is kept at bay. Usually, a folic acid test is done alongside a vitamin B12 test.
