Electrolytes Test Cost

Electrolytes are chemicals that can conduct electrical impulses in the body. Sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides, magnesium and potassium, are few examples of bodily electrolytes. Electrolyte testing is carried out to investigate its imbalance if any in the body. This test is necessary for routine screening when patients display symptoms like nausea, confusion, weakness, cardiac arrhythmia and edema. This test is needed frequently for evaluating chronic or acute illness, or may be required regularly if the patient has a condition that causes imbalance of electrolytes.

Electrolytes are necessary for conduction of various bodily functions. Imbalance affects functioning of organs. Electrolytes like calcium are essential in formation of teeth and bones. It is also necessary for normal functioning of heart. Likewise, sodium, chlorides, magnesium and potassium also play an important role in regulating muscle function, maintaining fluid balance, bone formation and also regulating cell functions.

No special preparations are required from the patient's end before undergoing an electrolytes test. The patient is asked to do midnight fasting before giving his blood samples for testing electrolyte levels. Blood sample is taken out from veins in arms or forearms. The person can resume his routine tasks once the sample is given. In rare cases, the patient may feel dizzy or listless after giving the blood sample. But that feeling passes in few minutes.

Discussed ahead are electrolyte ranges that are normal and abnormal. Abnormal levels can alert the doctor of life-threatening disorders that may be contracted by patient due to the same. Normal levels of plasma sodium are in range of 135-145 Millimoles Per Litre (mmol/L), whereas abnormal levels are below 120 mmol/l and above 160 mmol/l. 3.6–5.4 mmol/l are normal levels of potassium, below 3.0 mmol/l and above 6.0 mmol/l are abnormal levels. 4–60 mmol/l are normal levels of chloride. Normal ranges of serum calcium are 8.5–10.5 mg/dl, whereas, below 6.0 mg/dl and above 13.0 mg/dl are not advisable. For magnesium 1.8–3.0 mg/dl are the permissible ranges.

Symptoms like drop or elevation in blood pressure, seizures, muscular cramps, excessive fatigue, show up when there is electrolyte imbalance in the body. A drop in even one of the electrolyte can affect the entire body functioning. As mentioned before, electrolytes test can be carried out as part of other diagnostic tests or specifically for investigating the imbalance. It can be ordered as part of BMP panel or CMP panel that may consist tests such as glucose test, creatinine test and BUN.

Foods that are high on electrolyte content are coconut water, yogurt, seafood, eggs, asparagus and other green leafy vegetables, cheese and milk. Consuming these food sources can be enough for replenishing electrolyte content in your body and smoothing out any imbalance due to loss of any of the minerals.

Electrolytes Test FAQs
Q: Which are the common electrolytes usually tested?
A: Serum sodium, chloride, potassium, and calcium.
Q: How are electrolyte balance and thirst mechanism related?
A: When the body gets dehydrated, electrolyte balance stimulates the thirst mechanism.
Q: Is electrolyte balance necessary?
A: Electrolyte balance is necessary for the proper functioning of body cells and organs. Electrolytes generate electricity to carry electrical impulses and maintain voltage across the cells.
Q: What are the rich sources of electrolytes?
A: Coconut water and citrus fruits are rich and natural sources of electrolytes, mainly potassium.
Q: What is most common cause of death in diarrhea patients?
A: Electrolyte imbalance.
