Electroencephalogram (EEG) test is a non-invasive diagnostic test that records the electrical signals of the brain with the help of electrodes and a monitor. This test allows the doctor to check for any abnormalities in the brain wave pattern that may indicate a problem in the brain. EEGs are most commonly done to diagnose epilepsy and sleep disorders.
In this procedure, small metal discs with electrodes are attached to the scalp. These electrodes record the electrical activity of the brain and these electrical signals are converted into wave forms on the computer. EEG test takes about 40 minutes to an hour.
Conditions that can be diagnosed via an EEG test includes epilepsy, sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, coma, depth of anesthesia, encephalopathy, brain tumors, head injuries, dementia, and several other related conditions.
