Symptoms of dengue fever usually start showing in 4-6 days of infesting the person. They can remain in his or her body for upto 10 days. If you notice symptoms such as sudden high fever, profuse sweating, nose bleeds, severe joint pain and headaches in your family members or yourself, remember these signs are of dengue fever. These signs and symptoms are often and but naturally confused with a seasonal flu or fever. If ignored, the symptoms can lead to complications like dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Testing for dengue IgM is done through a blood sample. The sample is taken out from the patient's arms through a syringe. It is an extremely basic blood test and the person feels nothing more than an ant-sting. The symptoms make the person feel extremely weak and drained out of every ounce of energy in them. Hence, he or she can go back to resting once the blood sample is collected. Home sampling can also be ordered by patient's family if they are in no position to travel to the laboratory.

Dengue IgM is rarely a standalone test. It is ordered along with others such as Dengue IgG, Complete Blood Count (CBC), Basic metabolic panel (BMP), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) etc.

When both IgG and IgM antibody test positive, that is an indication that the person got infected with the dengue virus very recently. If IgM is low or negative and only the IgG is positive then the the person has been infected from a considerable time. There are possibilities of both IgM and IgG antibodies both showing negative results. In such cases, it means that the cause of the person's illness is some other infection and he doesn't have dengue.
