Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) Test Cost

Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) analysis are a group of tests performed to know conditions of your spine and brain. CSF is a fluid that flows freely throughout the central nervous system. This analysis requires a small sample of CSF on which a series of tests are performed.

CSF is vital for nutrient transportation through nervous system. It also protects the brain from sudden shock. Choroid plexus in brain produces this essential fluid which is again absorbed by the blood stream. Besides performing various essential functions within the central nervous system, CSF also helps in waste removal while flowing through brain and spinal cord.

Cerebral spinal fluid test involves determination of fluid pressure, protein and glucose content, RBC and WBC counts and types, presence of pathogen etc. In short, the CSF test can provide every single information related to the central nervous system.

The sample collection needs medical expertise and is performed by a specialized health practitioner through the lumbar puncture procedure which is also known as spinal tap.

During the procedure, patients are required to change in hospital gowns and lie down on their side. They are also required to crawl their knees up to their chest. This position allows your doctor to insert a needle through your lower back into the spinal column. The procedure can be carried out within 30 – 45 minutes where you remain under local anesthesia and numbing cream.

Once the needle reaches the desired position, a small amount of CSF is withdrawn. The needle is then ejected out and the needful is done by the doctor following which you can prepare to leave for home. Post procedure, it may be slightly painful and patients are required to take ample rest and perhaps pain relievers are also prescribed.

Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) Test FAQs
Q: How is CSF sample tested for detecting abnormalities?
A: Once the CSF sample is obtained, it is subjected to microscopic examination. Presence of RBCs, WBCs, bacteria, pus cells is checked. Besides this, the gross appearance, color and viscosity of CSF is also noted down.
Q: Which disorders can be diagnosed by performing CSF test?
A: CSF test is most commonly used for diagnosis of cancer, meningeal infection, multiple sclerosis, cerebral infection and hemorrhage between layers of brain.
Q: Who can collect CSF sample to perform a test?
A: CSF sample is collected by performing a lumbar puncture for which spinal cord needs to be accessed. Only a neurosurgeon with expertise in spine surgery performs this procedure. The sample is then examined by a pathologist.
Q: When is collection of sample for CSF test contraindicated?
A: Suspicion of ongoing intra cranial hemorrhage, risk of herniation of brain tissue through spinal canal, spinal tumor at the site of lumbar puncture are some incidents when collection of a tissue sample for CSF test is contraindicated.
Q: Can pregnant women undergo CSF test?
A: Pregnant women are generally not advised to undergo CSF test unless it is absolutely necessary. However, if required, sample is collected with utmost care to avoid any damage to spinal nerves and pelvic organs.
