Creatine Kinase (CK) MB Test is one of the pathology tests which helps in determining the health of cardiac tissues. There are 3 types of CK synthesized in the human body. CK MB is related to muscles of the heart, intestines, brain etc. It is an enzyme and chemically a protein in nature.
Levels of CK MB can be checked as part of cardiac risk marker test along with other cardiac enzymes or individually as well. Creatine Kinase is released into the bloodstream when cardiac muscles sustain any damage. Therefore, elevated levels of this enzyme are an indication of some underlying pathology.

Indications of undergoing CK MB test:
- Recurrent chest pain
- Pain in the left arm radiating up to finger tips
- Known history of any previous cardiac disorder
- Recurrent difficulty in respiration
Disorders like myocardial ischemia, impending myocardial infarction, can be diagnosed with this test. Levels of CK MB are elevated for a few hours after a patient has had myocardial infarction. In such patients, lowered levels of CK MB indicate recovery of cardiac muscles from the injury they have sustained.
CK MB is often combined with Lactate Dehydrogenase test, troponin test and myoglobin test. Together, all these tests comprise cardiac risk markers. Other investigations which could be coupled with CK MB test include ECG, angiography, stress test etc.
CK MB test requires a venous blood sample. A small quantity of blood is withdrawn from a vein in the upper arm and stored in sterile conditions till it is tested. CK MB test results are obtained within a few hours of collecting the blood sample. Normal levels of the enzyme in a healthy adult should be 5-25 IU/liters. Patients should undergo the test as early as possible after they have been prescribed it. Early diagnosis of any health disorder is the first step towards speedy recovery.
