Anti Phospholipid (APL) Test Cost

Anti Phospholipid (APL) test is a blood test which detects presence of the antibodies in human tissues. This blood test is usually required to detect presence of certain autoimmune disorders.

Human body has a well developed immune system which synthesizes antibodies to counter any toxic or harmful influences. However, at times, due to genetic dysfunction, the immune system forms antibodies against the person's own body tissues. APL antibodies are synthesized against phospholipids which form an important part of blood vessels. These antibodies lead to recurrent and excessive blood clot formation which has harmful consequences.

How is APL Test Performed?

APL test involves collecting a blood sample from a vein in the patient's arm. Patients may have to visit a pathology lab for sample collection or they could have a laboratory technician visit them at home.

APL test can be performed at those laboratories which are equipped with modern medical technology. Highly calibrated equipment providing results of great accuracy are required to detect presence and levels of anti phospholipid antibodies. Absence of antibodies does not necessitate that the patient is healthy. Patients may be asked to repeat the test after a few weeks. Both results are compared by the doctor before confirming any diagnosis. Patients who show positive results of the antibodies but with low levels, are also asked to repeat the test some time later.

Higher levels of anti phospholipid antibodies pose a constant risk of developing a blood clot which could have fatal consequences. Therefore, it is necessary to start immediate medical treatment if the test results are abnormal.

In addition to anti phospholipid antibody test, patients may also be asked to undergo clotting time test, prothrombin test, tumor marker tests or scans like USG, MRI, CT scan, depending on the diagnosis.

Anti Phospholipid (APL) Test FAQs
Q: What is the procedure of APL antibody test?
A: Using a syringe, a sample of blood is taken from an easily accessible and visible vein of the arm under highly antiseptic conditions. Feeling some degree of twinge is normal during the test. The blood sample is then tested further for detection of antibodies.
Q: What parameters are checked in APL antibody test?
A: APL antibodies are of three types - LAC, ACL and anti-β2 -GPI. Even if a single antibody out of any of the three is found, a diagnosis of APS (antiphospholipid syndrome) is confirmed. The presence of all three antibodies indicates a more serious form of APS. These results should hold positive both times when performed 12 weeks apart.
Q: Is there any need for special preparation before APL antibody test?
A: Inform your doctor about details of your past medical history, any medications you have been taking and what things you are allergic to. There is no special need for fasting before the procedure.
Q: Is APL Antibody test risky?
A: Because APL antibodies are being checked for abnormal bleeding issues, risks related to bleeding or circulatory instability are present.
