Amylase test is a blood test used to detect activities of the gastrointestinal tract by measuring blood levels of amylase. Amylase is a digestive enzyme produced and secreted by salivary glands and pancreas too.
Measuring levels of amylase helps in determining disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, more specifically pancreas. It is a relatively simple blood test and is performed in most pathology labs.

Procedure of Amylase Test:
Following are the steps involved in performing amylase test:
- Patients have to visit a pathology lab before the designated time for the test.
- It is important to follow certain dietary restrictions before undergoing the test. Patients are advised about this by their doctor well in advance.
- A venous blood sample is obtained from the patient's arm. Often an elastic band or ligature is tied around the arm to locate the vein well.
- Blood samples are stored in a fluid state in extremely hygienic conditions till the time of testing
- Cutting edge medical technology is used to detect levels of amylase.
It is important to undergo the test within a week of developing relevant symptoms. Amylase levels remain elevated only between 48 hours to a few days after pancreas is affected, after which they will return to normal.
Indications of Amylase Test:
Results of amylase test directly reflect health of the patient's hepatobiliary system. Some indications that necessitate Amylase test are mentioned below:
- Recurrent digestive troubles
- Sudden acute abdominal pain
- History of alcoholism
- Chronic Pancreatitis
- Past history of pancreatic troubles
- Pancreatic cyst
- History of salivary gland disorders
In addition to the above mentioned factors, amylase test may be advised for other medical indications as well.
In addition to amylase test, patients may also require to undergo Liver Function Test, MRI, CT scan or USG of pancreas, lipase test etc. If amylase test does not offer a satisfactory result, patients may have to undergo the same test; albeit by providing a urine sample instead of a blood sample.
Amylase test is an important parameter while assessing a patient's digestive health. Abnormal results should be reported to a doctor at the earliest to avoid health complications.
