ACTH test is performed to detect levels of Adreno Corticotropic Hormone. Adreno Corticotropic Hormone (ACTH) is a secretion of the pituitary gland, an organ which is located in the brain. It is secreted by the cells lying in the anterior portion of pituitary gland. Levels of ACTH can be detected by performing blood test.
ACTH acts on adrenal gland which is located on top of each kidney to stimulate secretion of adrenocorticoids. These are a form of steroids and help in several physiological functions. Altered levels of adrenocorticoids leads to a direct signal being sent to the hypothalamus, which in turn secretes hormones that will reduce or increase levels of ACTH secreted from pituitary gland. It is important to know this cycle in order to decipher that disturbances at any levels will affect levels of ACTH.

ACTH test is performed at any well equipped pathology laboratory or a hospital equipped with adequate diagnostic services. Patients suffering from blood pressure disturbances, metabolic disorders, Addison's disease, Cushing's syndrome, adrenal tumors, pituitary tumors, are usually required to undergo this test.
Before undergoing ACTH test, patients may have to follow dietary or medicinal restrictions. It is mandatory to refrain from smoking tobacco and consuming alcohol prior to the test. On the day of test, patients should arrive well in time for providing a blood sample. Since blood cortisol levels are naturally high during morning hours, patients are most likely advised to get the test done at the same time.
Patients are made to sit in a comfortable position before collecting blood. A tourniquet or elastic band is secured tightly above the elbow of an arm. A vein is located and blood is collected using a syringe and needle. Collected blood sample is preserved in a bottle which has anti-coagulating agents. This prevents blood form clotting and helps in providing accurate test results.
Advanced medical tools are required to determine levels of ACTH in the obtained blood samples. Patients may experience slight bruising and pain in the arm after blood sample has been withdrawn. These symptoms usually subside within a few hours.
Noticeable weight changes, excessive hair growth all over the body, digestive troubles, sleep troubles, are some of the external manifestations of disturbed levels of ACTH. Along with ACTH test, patients may also require to be tested for sex hormones (androgens and estrogen) and levels of other hormones. Scans to determine tumors of pituitary gland or adrenal gland, may be advised to some patients.
ACTH test is very important in determining functioning of hormonal cycle. Patients should follow pre-procedure instructions well, in order to obtain accurate test results.
