2D Echo Cost

2D Echocardiography or 2D Echo as it is commonly referred to, is a test used to diagnose cardiac disorders. Sound waves are used to observe and assess cardiac muscles, cardiac chambers, valves etc. This test also helps to determine the amount and rate of blood flow through all the chambers of heart.

2D Echo is usually performed at diagnostic centers equipped with an ultrasound scanner and other necessary equipment. Multispecialty hospitals equipped with adequate technology also provide this facility. The test is usually performed under supervision of a radiologist and cardiologist.

Patients are advised to give up smoking and drinking completely, 2-3 days before the test. Instructions regarding diet, physical workout, medication, before the test, are to be followed well. There is no need to remain admitted before or after 2D Echo, unless the person is keeping ill health.

Patients are asked to lie down on their back in a comfortable position before the test begins. A transducer is moved along the patient's chest in order to study cardiac tissue well. This method is known as transthoracic 2D-Echo. Alternatively, patients may be asked to perform some exercise for about 5 minutes, following which the transducer is again placed on the chest. This procedure is known as stress echocardiography and is done to check for cardiac activity after physical exertion.

Sometimes, the transducer may be inserted into the patient's body via the throat. It is inserted into the esophagus till it reaches the level of heart. This is known as transesophageal 2D-Echo and is known to offer more accurate results.

Size of heart chambers, thickness of heart walls, elasticity of heart valves, adequacy of blood flowing through the coronaries, are some of the factors assessed during 2D Echo. Adults or elderly patients experiencing recurrent chest pain or other symptoms of cardiac distress, may be advised to undergo 2D Echo. Pregnant women can undergo fetal echocardiography to check for any cardiac anomalies in the developing fetus. New born babies who show symptoms of cardiac anomaly, also may be required to undergo echocardiography.

It takes about 15-20 minutes to perform 2D-Echocardiography. If stress echocardiography is involved, the time span may increase by another 15-20 minutes. Patients are discharged to go home as soon as the test is completed. In extremely rare cases, patients may experience symptoms of discomfort during or after the procedure. Emergency medical treatment is arranged in such cases and the test may be scheduled for another time if it has not been completed.

Patients should not undergo 2D-Echo without prescription of a cardiologist. When required, the procedure should only be undergone at a well equipped facility employing modern medical technology and well qualified doctors. 2D Echo is an important tool to diagnose cardiac disorders. It can also be performed for patients undergoing treatment for existing cardiac disorders to determine their progress.

2D Echo FAQs
Q: How harmful could smoking be?
A: By avoiding smoking, you can protect your heart 80% more in comparison to a smoker.
Q: Is chest pain always essential to conclude a heart attack?
A: No. Silent heart attack could occur in patients suffering from diabetes.
Q: What is stress echocardiogram?
A: It is performed while a person exercises on a treadmill or bicycle (stationary). It can detect decreased blood supply to the heart even when other routine cardiac test results are normal.
Q: Can a heart attack occur more than once even if the first one is treated?
A: Yes. In fact, the chances increase.
