VDRL – A Classic Test for Syphilis

VDRL (venereal disease research laboratory) test falls on the same lines as that of rapid plasma reagin (RPR). It is typically ordered to diagnose a sexually transmitted disease (STD) called ‘syphilis’.

Have a broader view about this test as Dr. Pratibha Karande unveils its vital aspects.

What is VDRL test all about?

It is carried out for the screening of syphilis. Syphilis is a disease – a bacterial infection caused by bacteria Treponema pallidum. The test is basically performed to detect the presence of VDRL antibodies in the blood.

When to go for VDRL test?

When the doctor suspects that the patient could be suffering from syphilis, he would normally advise to undergo VDRL test. If the test results are positive, it clearly suggests that the antibodies for T. pallidum are present in the patient’s body. On the other hand, when the results come out to be negative, it does not clearly mean that the patient’s blood has no antibodies for T. pallidum.

What is the most important factor for VRDL test?

The time for the test to be carried out is very crucial for the detection of antibodies for T. pallidum. For example, when the test is performed during the initial phases of the infection then, in majority of the cases, the results come out to be false negative. It is, therefore, so very essential to carry out the test in the second phase of the infection or the test could be repeated for the confirmation of the diagnosis, if required.

A positive result will help the doctor to provide appropriate treatment for the patient.
